Andrew Sweet

Andrew Sweet is an author, social activist and equality advocate, and software engineer who uses his writing, in science fiction and other genres, to explore the dynamic of power in an ocean of ever-changing technological advancement.

All of Andrew’s stories deal with power imbalance, concepts of freedom and slavery, and the labeling of people as “other.” His protagonists usually come from a lower caste, and deal struggle within a society that sees them as unworthy. It’s through examining these lives that Andrew hopes that other, more privileged, members of society might understand the need to lean-in and support those less fortunate, yielding a stronger, safer, and more equitable society for us all!

A man and a woman standing at a basin-shaped table. This image is meant to portray the power imbalance in a patriarchal society. The backdrop for the image is a sky full of planets. Colors are very reminiscent of the 1970s earth tones.

Born in Houston, Texas in 1976 to mixed parents—only nine years after the Loving v. Virginia decision made his parents’ relationship legal, and six years after anti-miscegenation laws were rescinded in the state, Andrew’s family lived two-room cabin without electricity or running water. The only tools for entertainment available were an old honky-tonk piano or pen and paper.

It was against this backdrop that Andrew found his love for writing, and began to explore his social identity. In small-town, Texas, Andrew found friendship and experienced the loss of his best friend in a traffic accident at a young age. Andrew helped raise chickens, goats, and other animals, as well as tend garden, on their small farm.

Eventually, deciding that the farm life wasn’t his calling, Andrew joined the United States Marine Corps, relocating to USMC Headquarters near Washington, D.C., where Andrew wrote (but didn’t publish) his first three novels while, all dealing with the impact and influence of belief on the world. Andrew met his beautiful wife Hollee and his brand new daughter, who prompted a move across the country to Seattle.

Andrew’s first novel, Models and Citizens, in 2020, a novel which immediately received 5-stars from Readers’ Favorite, and subsequently won a BookFest Award. Andrew published his second novel, Bodhi Rising, in the series shortly thereafter, and received another 5-star Readers’ Favorite award, as well as another BookFest award for that one as well. Andrew finished the Reality Gradient Trilogy with Libera, Goddess of Worlds. The entire series was short-listed for the Chanticleer International Book Award in 2024.

Andrew halfway through his follow-on series in the Reality Gradient universe, a series named Virtual Wars, with the first two novels, Evasion and Defiance, and Solitude and Retaliation available for sale.
